Every great name carries a story, and ours is rooted in one of history's most defining chapters.

Gallipoli. April 25, 1915.

Allied troops landed on Turkey's Gallipoli peninsula, launching months of intense trench warfare along the shores of the Dardanelles Strait. Among the soldiers who answered the call were North Americans — the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, the only North American contingent in the invasion, fighting alongside British and ANZAC forces. After a short stay in Egypt, 1,076 Newfoundlanders came ashore along the Dardanelles Strait on September 20, 1915. Young men who had left their homes with dreams of serving their country, now finding themselves in the heat and dust of the Gallipoli peninsula. They spent their early months digging trenches and keeping long night watches, learning trench warfare from ANZAC and British forces. Enemy fire, scarce water, and harsh conditions made every day a battle just to survive. Veterans Affairs CanadaVeterans Affairs Canada

The Royal Newfoundland Regiment is the only unit in the Canadian Armed Forces to hold the Gallipoli battle honour. Though Newfoundland was not yet part of Canada at the time, these men and their legacy became woven into the fabric of what Canada stands for — courage, sacrifice, and showing up for others, even from across the ocean. So why name a Turkish grocery store after this campaign?

Because Gallipoli is not just a story of war. It is a story of mutual respect born from sacrifice. The campaign lasted eight months, with more than 44,000 troops killed on the Allied side and the Ottomans losing approximately 87,000 men. Both sides suffered immensely. And yet, from that suffering grew something remarkable — a deep and lasting bond between former enemies. Daily Sabah

The spirit of Gallipoli teaches us that those who once faced each other across a battlefield can come to honour one another's humanity. That is the friendship between Turkey and the nations whose sons fought there — a friendship built not on forgetting the past, but on honouring it together.

At Gallipoli Grocery in Barrie, Ontario, we carry that spirit into everything we do. We bring the warmth, flavours, and traditions of Turkish culture to Canadian families — because we believe that food, like history, has the power to bring people together across any distance.

Whether you're here for simit, baklava, Turkish tea, or just to discover something new — you are part of that bridge.

Welcome to Gallipoli Grocery. Where two worlds meet, with love and respect. 🇨🇦🇹🇷
